Obituary for John J Rizzo, Sr.

On Friday, January 3, 2020, John J. Rizzo, Sr., loving husband, father and grand-father, passed away at the age of 92.

Born April 9, 1927, in Buffalo, New York, he was the son of the late Michael and Josephine Rizzo, and the second youngest of seven siblings.
John graduated from Buffalo Technical School in 1945 where he studied Industrial Chemistry. Upon graduation, he entered the Marine Corps. After being honorably discharged, he attended Canisius College and joined the DuPont Chemical Company as a laboratory technician in Buffalo, New York. In 1955, he joined FMC where he was credited with two patents. He retired from FMC Princeton as a Senior Chemist in 1986.
John was very active with many local organizations including the Princeton Elks, Hopewell Knights of Columbus, Marine Corps League Trenton Detachment 207, and the Colonial Sportsmens Club in Hopewell, NJ. He was past Commander of the Hopewell American Legion Post 339 and past Vice Commander of the Mercer County American Legion. John was also a very active member of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Pennington, NJ.
John married the love of his life, Dorothy Duffy, on July 16, 1949, and they happily raised three children in Pennington, NJ. Known as “Poppy” to his grand-children and many others, anyone that knew John would say he was a kind and loving man with an infectious smile. He was a chef in the kitchen and enjoyed hosting. He appreciated all aspects of life but was especially devoted to his family and his love of winemaking; John made many varieties of wine over the course of sixty years.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Josephine; his wife, Dorothy; three brothers, Nicholas, Frank and Michael Rizzo; three sisters, Anna, Mary and Josephine (Babe); and his son John Jr. He is survived by his two daughters, Michelle Rizzo and her fiancé Jim Megna, and Rosemarie Guld and her husband, Bob; a sister-in-law, Carole Nicolini; a brother-in-law, Francis Duffy; four grand-children, Jennifer Rizzo, Keri Rizzo, Jeffrey and Jason Lippincott; one great grand-child, Logan Dzurkoc and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, from 6pm to 8pm at Wilson Apple Funeral Home, 2560 Pennington Road, Pennington, NJ. The American Legion Post 339 will be conducting a service at 7pm. A funeral service will be held at the same location on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at 10am. Burial to follow in Highland Cemetery, Hopewell, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to NJ Veterans Memorial Home of Menlo Park, 132 Evergreen Road, Edison, NJ 08837, where John was loved and cared for in the final year of his life. Condolences are welcome at
