Obituary for Geneva Smith Williams

Geneva Smith Williams passed away peacefully on Monday, May 20, 2019. Born on May 6, 1934 to the late Bertha Washington Smith and Arthur Smith of Lakeland, FL. At an early age, she accepted Christ and was an avid reader who enjoyed writing as well. She graduated valedictorian from Lakeland’s Rochelle High School in 1951. Afterwards, she attended Florida A & M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee and received her Bachelor of Science degree in English. On June 6, 1955, she married the late Norman Louis Williams, Sr. Geneva was a very dedicated, caring mother and wife. She and her husband, who was in the US Air Force, lived in several places including Fairbanks, AK. before settling in Trenton, NJ. Geneva was a gifted and devoted teacher who first taught at Bristol Township, PA as a Special Education instructor from 1962-70. Afterwards, she was hired as an English teacher at Antheil Jr. High School in 1970 and later at Fisher Middle School located in the Ewing Township School District where she remained until her retirement in 1994. Geneva deeply took an interest in all of her students and introduced them to famous writers, philosophers, poets and African-American literature, history and theater.

Geneva had such an outgoing personality and was always socially involved. She received numerous awards including two A+ for Kids Grant Awards, Fisher School’s Golden Apple Award, Fisher’s Bronze Eagle for Founding Member of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Speech Committee and Citizens of the Year by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. She was a member of the Mercer County Retired Educators Association and the New Jersey Educators Association as well as the National Education Association (NEA). In her spare time, Geneva wrote original short stories and poems about her family, growing up in the south, which were later published. As a result, she was awarded as a distinguished member of the International Society of Poets in 2000. Geneva was a proud member of Trenton’s Covenant Presbyterian Church since 1961 where she worshipped, volunteered and served in many compacities throughout the decades. Geneva enjoyed being around her family, friends and hosted many holiday gatherings and cookouts. She loved celebrating Kwanzaa, testing new recipes, gardening and was an enthusiastic world traveler. She often thought of others by mailing personal letters, greeting cards and gifts. Geneva took time to consistently donate money to causes that she strongly believed in such as Southern Poverty Law Center, United Negro College Fund, St. Joseph Indian School, Hale House, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, American Diabetes Association, Disabled American Veterans and Doctors Without Borders. Geneva will be greatly missed by all who knew of her many contributions. She was a member of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and supported their fundraisers for youth scholarships.

Preceded in death by her husband Norman L. Williams, Sr. and son Eric C. Williams, Brothers preceding Geneva in death include Arthur H. Smith, Jr., Andrew “Ted” Smith, Sr., and Samuel Smith, Sr. she is survived by two sons: Ty’n Thonotosassa (nee Norman L. Williams, Jr) and his wife Charlotte P. Armstead of Baltimore, MD; Peter Williams and his wife Pauline Williams of Trenton, NJ; six grandchildren: Teriyaki-Reba G, Crystal, Norman Wesley, Allyssa, Samuel and Jeanella; great-grandson Christopher I. Williams and other great-grandchildren; sisters: Lena Pickett (Edgar T. Pickett), Bernice Smith (Cherry Smith), Hazel Perkins all of Lakeland, FL, and a hosts of nieces, nephews and friends. If desired, memorial donations may be given to one of Geneva’s organizations mention above. Funeral services will be held at Trenton’s Christ Temple Ministries, 471 Parkway Avenue, on Thursday, May 30, 2019. Wake/Viewing at 12 noon followed by services at 1:00pm. Afterwards, interment will be at Ewing Church Cemetery, 100 Scotch Road. Repass at The Presbyterian Church. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.wilsonapple.com.
