Obituary for Elaine E. Allen

Elaine Elizabeth Allen passed away at her home in Skillman, New Jersey on April 28, 2019. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Jeffrey Allen, her sister, four adult children from her first marriage, five grandchildren two great grandchildren, many cousins, nieces, nephews, a grand nephew, and two grand nieces.
The former Elaine E. Fairhurst was born in Paterson, NJ on 11/9/1938 to Elizabeth and Edwin Fairhurst. She was the eldest of four, having a brother Charles, a sister Irene , and a sister Leona, who died in childhood. Elaine graduated from the Bailey-Ellard Academy and soon married her first husband, Adrian Martin (deceased). They raised their four children in Hillsborough and later Skillman, NJ. During this time, she was active in serving her community, participating in her local rescue squad, 4H, the local Catholic Youth Organization, and the Girl Scouts. While still raising the family, Elaine also obtained her Associates degree in Nursing at Raritan Valley Community College, graduating on the Dean’s list.
Elaine and Adrian separated in 1983 and divorced in 1991. Elaine married Jeffrey Allen, a licensed psychologist, on 11/2/1992. She returned to her education and during the next decade completed her Bachelor’s in Nursing (BSN) at College of St. Elizabeth where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. She later obtained her Master’s in Nursing (MSN) at Rutgers University, followed by a certificate in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She was licensed in New Jersey as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN-c) in the specialty of psychiatry.
Elaine enjoyed an active and varied professional career, both while raising her children and later. She worked as an RN clinical nurse in a variety of settings including the emergency room, a psychiatric inpatient facility and a school for delinquent boys. As a BSN nurse, she worked for years as a Director of Nursing at a specialized treatment facility – the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenel, NJ. Later, after obtaining her MSN, she did prescription and medication management in private practice for Princeton Healthcare Associates and provided psychotherapy for Psychealth Associates, her husband’s private practice. There, she specialized in women’s issues and in working with adults with intellectual disabilities. With her husband, she conducted group therapy for developmentally and intellectually disabled adults. She also co-authored two articles on the treatment and management of children with special needs.
Throughout much of her career, Elaine also worked as a nurse consultant at the Rockbrook School, a facility for children with communication handicaps in Skillman, NJ. There, she co-authored a curriculum on sex education for special needs teenagers.
In her later years, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, traveling with her husband, and spending time at the Jersey Shore. She especially loved the American West and made several trips to Yellowstone National Park in Montana.
A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 7th at St. Alphonsus Church, East Prospect and Princeton Ave, Hopewell, NJ. Visitation will be from 10 am until time of Mass. A brief interment of ashes at Highland Cemetery will follow the mass. Then a catered luncheon will be offered in the church hall. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be sent to either American Cancer Society or ARC of New Jersey.
