Russell H. Mullen PENNINGTON
Russell H. Mullen, 94, a longtime resident of Mercer County, died peacefully at his home in Hopewell Township on April 8, 2019 surrounded by his long time friends and caregivers, Luemisher Horton, Janiqua White, Phyllis Horton and Rita Horton. Born in Pittsburg, PA, Russell was a graduate of both the University of Michigan, where he earned a BA in Journalism and Trenton State College, where he earned BA in Public Administration. He served in the US Army assisting in the training of officer candidates at the Field Artillery School at Fort Sill, OK, and later served an 18 year tenure working for the New Jersey Highway Department where he was named Acting Commissioner of Transportation in 1977 and began a second tour as Assistant Commissioner for Highways in 1978. He retired in 1991 and received accolades from the three governors under whom he served- Richard J. Hughes, Brendan Byrne and Jim Florio.
Russell is predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Nora Mullen (nee. Nora Twig of Stock-on-Trent, England) whom he referred to as his “true life’s companion” and with whom he shared his love of world history, reading and traveling throughout the entire United States and England. He was an avid stamp collector and his fascination and study of history could be seen in his many covers which focused on various periods and historical events. His collection of Winston Churchill writings also reflected his historical enthusiasm.
Russell leaves behind numerous family including, a step son, Paul Mullen; step daughter, Mrs. Olivia Bergner, grandchildren Heather Mullen Lee, Tara Mullen, Tori Torres Wiley , great- grandchildren, half brothers, nieces, nephews and many friends. Memorial services will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at the Wilson-Apple Funeral Home, 2560 Pennington Rd., Pennington, NJ 08534, with Rev. Daniel Casselberry, pastor of the Pennington United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels of Mercer County, 320 Hollowbrook Dr., Ewing, NJ 08638. Condolences are welcome at Wilson-Apple Funeral Home 2560 Pennington Rd.
