Obituary for Joseph S. Stroman

Joseph Stiverson Stroman, 82, of Ewing, died Wednesday, December 5 surrounded by his family. Beloved son of Susan Leona Stiverson Stroman and Joseph Brobst Stroman, he was born June 10, 1936. Joe grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey with his younger brother Robert (Bob). Joe often spoke fondly of his childhood in Bergen County. Joe graduated from Tenafly High School in 1954, Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1958 with a B.S. in Education, and Columbia University in 1965 where he earned an M.A. in Elementary Administration.

Joe was treasured by his wife of 56 years, Pauline (Polly) Stroman. He met Polly in high school where they performed in school musicals together. They began dating after college, marrying in December of 1961. Together they built a beautiful and bustling home in Ewing, New Jersey and raised 4 children: Karen Stroman Pardonner of Milford, NJ; Stephen P. Stroman of Hopewell, NJ; Gregory J. Stroman of Skillman, NJ; and Jeffrey D. Stroman of Mercer, ME. Joe’s children cherished and admired their father, and are immeasurably grateful for his love and guidance.

Joe was a skilled gardener of vegetables and flowers, a music and theater enthusiast, a trumpet player, and an educator. He loved to learn and to share his thoughts with his family and friends, who were luckier for these conversations. Joe was an avid consumer of The New York Times, as well as The Trenton Times, a publication which featured many of his letters to the editor. Joe had a passion for elementary childhood education and the many children who passed through his hallways in his role as teacher and school administrator.

Joe started his career as a 5th grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School in Bergenfield, NJ. He served as the Elementary Principal at Benjamin Franklin School in Lawrence Township, NJ from 1967-1969. He spent the remainder of his educational career in the Bensalem Township Public School District where he held a variety of positions including, Early Childhood Supervisor, Elementary Supervisor of Gifted & Talented, and finally, Middle School Assistant Principal at the Cecelia Snyder Middle School until he retired in 2001.

In later years, Joe’s delight in life was his 9 grandchildren: Kelsey, Heather, Matthew, Patrick, Michael, Grace, Asa, Kody, and Kayla. In return, they adored him. Joe loved the outdoors and fostered that love in his grandchildren, making sure there were all manner of bikes in the garage, kayaks and fishing boats at the lake, as well as opportunities to travel to Maine, the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and even Alaska to enjoy the peace and wonder he found in nature.

Warm, compassionate, and patient, and also generous, intelligent, and innovative, Joe will be profoundly missed by his family and many friends. He is survived by his wife, Pauline; his children and their spouses, Karen and Steven W. Pardonner, Stephen P. and Amy Grace Stroman, Gregory J. and Berca Stroman, and Jeffrey D. and Kathryn Stroman; grandchildren; brother Robert of Sausalito,CA; brothers and sisters-in-law, and many nieces & nephews. He is predeceased by his parents.

Joe was an active member of the Ewing Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and was a member of Phi Delta Kappa.

A celebration of Joe’s life will be held on December 15th, 10:00 am at The 1867 Sanctuary of Ewing, NJ.
