Obituary for Jean Ryder Riley

MONTGOMERY TWP.
Jean Rider Sullivan Riley, 97, of Montgomery Township, passed away peacefully on Friday October 2ND, 2020.

Jean was born in Foxboro, MA. She attended House in the Pines Preparatory School before enrolling in Wheelock College, where she earned a degree in Education. Upon marriage she moved to Levittown, NY followed by Huntington NY, where she raised two of her three children. A change of jobs moved the family to Blawenburg NJ, where they eventually welcomed their third child. Jean’s passion for reading and books took her from volunteer in the mid-60s at Chapin School (Princeton NJ) to the school’s first librarian, growing its collection from a few shelves to one that supported an enrollment of over two hundred children, ranging from grades Kindergarten to Eight. In 1995, they honored that accomplishment with the creation of The Jean Riley Picture Book Collection, which as of today is still bringing joy to students and will for years to come.

Upon retirement, Jean found her next passion: quilting. She created many beautiful works of art that were routinely shown at The Pennington Day Quilt Show with fellow artists from The Pennington Quilters. Her quilts won many blue ribbons at The Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Fair held annually every summer.

In 2013, she moved to Stonebridge at Montgomery (NJ) where she immersed herself in the community, playing bridge many days a week while being a member of the quilting and knitting groups. It was felt amongst family one had to call ahead to get on her schedule.

Jean is preceded in death by her parents Carl E. & Dorothy Sullivan, brother and sister-in-law Carl Jr. and Barbara Sullivan, and S. David Riley. She is survived by her sister Gail Fleming of Sudbury, MA; her children: Susan P. (Michael) Wallo of Oak Bluffs, MA; Nicholas (Patricia) Riley of Fort Worth, TX; and Kathryn (Mark) Andrew of Lawrenceville, NJ; her four grandchildren: Elizabeth Wallo (Vincent Mandarano) of Edgartown, MA and Hailey, Tyler and Ava Andrew of Lawrenceville, NJ. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and a great-nephew as well as many friends at Stonebridge of Montgomery, where she resided.

A private memorial service and celebration of life will be held at a later date. Condolences are welcomed and appreciated at Wilsonapple.com. Arrangements are by the Wilson-Apple Funeral Home, Pennington.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Jean’s memory to:
